Legendary Pays $3M+ for Fanfiction-Based Book Film Rights

Author : Caleb Jan 18,2026

Legendary Pictures has reportedly spent over $3 million to secure the film rights to SenLinYu's forthcoming dark fantasy novel, Alchemised.

The details of this record-breaking deal come from THR, which states Legendary made its substantial offer early to preempt competitive bidding. Sources claim this acquisition could be the most expensive book-to-film rights deal in history, adjusting for inflation.

You might ask, 'Why such intense interest in Alchemised before its publication?' While the book will unveil a new magical realm upon its release on September 23, 2025, its origins are deeply rooted in the world of Harry Potter fanfiction.

Though there is no official connection, THR's sources indicate Alchemised began as a 'Dramione' fanfic—exploring a secret romance between Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger. The author, SenLinYu (or Sen), has since diverged from the source, crafting the original world of Paladia with a new protagonist, Helena Marino.

"In this gripping dark fantasy debut," describes the official Alchemised website, "a woman with lost memories battles to survive a war-torn world of necromancy and alchemy—and the man assigned to uncover her deepest secrets."

Alchemised arrives with significant backing from Sen's established reputation in fantasy circles. What started as stories written during their baby's naptime evolved into a globally shared body of work.

This includes Manacled, a Harry Potter fanfiction with a 4.63-star rating from nearly 140,000 reviews on Goodreads. Sen's author profile notes their stories have surpassed 20 million downloads and been translated into 23 languages.

"I'm honored by Legendary's incredible enthusiasm for the project and can't wait to see the world of Paladia come to life," Sen said in a statement to THR.

A film adaptation of Alchemised remains a distant prospect. The novel itself publishes in a matter of weeks. In the meantime, you can read about how Kit Harington, Keira Knightley, Simon Pegg, and others recently voiced the new Harry Potter audiobook release.
