Kojima Fans Notice Fun Easter Egg Linking Death Stranding 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2 Box Arts

Author : Samuel May 25,2025

Over the weekend, fans were treated to a new trailer for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, along with exciting details like a release date, a collector's edition, box art, and more. As enthusiasts delved deeper into the reveal, a keen-eyed fan discovered an intriguing link to Hideo Kojima's previous work, Metal Gear Solid 2.

The box art for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach features Sam "Porter" Bridges, portrayed by Norman Reedus, cradling the child "Lou," a character familiar to players of the first game. Reddit user ReverseTheFlash shared a post titled "He did it again," juxtaposing this box art with a Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty slipcase that showcases a similar visual theme.

The Metal Gear Solid 2 promotional image features Japanese singer Gackt holding a child in a composition reminiscent of the Death Stranding 2 box art. While not an exact replica, the similarities are striking and offer a playful nod to fans. This connection also brings to mind a curious aspect of Metal Gear Solid's out-of-universe backstory.

Leading up to the release of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Gackt was prominently featured in several promotional materials. This included special slip-covers for the game in certain regions, which have since become notable pieces of MGS memorabilia, sparking both intrigue and confusion among fans over the years.

For those curious about Gackt's involvement with Metal Gear Solid 2's campaign, Hideo Kojima provided an explanation in 2013. He noted that he chose Gackt for the game's TV commercials because "MGS1 was about DNA and MGS2 about MEME. DNA consists of 'AGTC', and adding 'K' of KOJIMA becomes 'GACKT.'" An interesting connection indeed.

Given the new trailer for Death Stranding 2 exudes strong Metal Gear vibes, it's no wonder fans are making these connections. While I believe any similarities are likely reflections of recurring themes in Kojima's work, it's always enjoyable to speculate and reminisce about promotional covers featuring Gackt.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to launch on June 26, 2025, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
