Sony and game developer Santa Monica Studio have unveiled the Dark Odyssey collection, an exciting update for God of War Ragnarök set to launch next week. This update brings a range of in-game equipment inspired by one of the franchise's most iconic outfits, offering players a fresh and stylish experience.
In a detailed PlayStation.Blog post, Sony outlined the various elements of their God of War 20th anniversary celebration, with Dark Odyssey taking center stage. This free update, arriving on March 20, is available to all God of War Ragnarök players on PlayStation 5 and PC. The collection boasts a sleek black-and-gold aesthetic, enhancing the visual appeal of Kratos and his companions as they navigate the realms of Norse mythology. Both Atreus and Freya will receive their own unique cosmetic sets, along with a variety of shields and weapons.
The highlight of the Dark Odyssey update is undoubtedly the new appearance and armor set for Kratos, reminiscent of a skin previously exclusive to players who conquered God of War 2 on God Mode difficulty. Players can access this content by opening any Lost Items chest in the base game or directly in the roguelike Valhalla mode of God of War Ragnarök post-update. Additionally, the update introduces the much-anticipated feature to customize Kratos' weapons' appearance without affecting their abilities.

Given that God of War Ragnarök was released in late 2022, a single update alone couldn't fully encapsulate the series' 20-year legacy. Sony's comprehensive celebration of God of War includes a variety of other activities and offers for fans who have followed Kratos' journey from the start. These include downloadable social media assets available here, an art showcase in collaboration with Los Angeles' Gallery Nucleus, new merchandise, sales, multiple vinyl releases covering the franchise's history, and more.
Santa Monica Studio expressed their gratitude, stating, "On behalf of everyone at Santa Monica Studio, we are immeasurably grateful to have had the chance to build the legacy of this series with and for you, the fans of God of War."
For those eager to further celebrate 20 years of God of War, you can look forward to an upcoming PlayStation symphony world tour starting next month. Additionally, delve into why we believe the next God of War title should continue the franchise's tradition of creativity.
