"Disney's Star Wars Horror Project Confirmed by Andor Showrunner"

Author : Ryan May 20,2025

Disney is reportedly venturing into uncharted territory with a secret Star Wars horror project, as revealed by Tony Gilroy, the showrunner of the critically acclaimed series Andor. In a recent interview with Business Insider, Gilroy hinted at Lucasfilm's ongoing efforts to develop this darker side of the beloved franchise.

"They're doing that. I think they're doing that," Gilroy stated when asked about the potential for a Star Wars horror project. "I think that's in the works, yeah." While specifics remain under wraps, this project could take the form of a TV series, a movie, or another innovative format. The creative team behind it has yet to be disclosed, and fans might have to wait years before seeing this project come to life. However, Gilroy's comments indicate that Disney is open to exploring new and thrilling directions for the Star Wars saga.

"The right creator, and the right moment, and the right vibe … you can do anything," Gilroy remarked, reflecting on his experience with Andor. He expressed hope that the success of Andor could inspire and support future creative endeavors within the franchise, much like how The Mandalorian paved the way for Andor.

The idea of a Star Wars horror project has long been a dream for many fans, including actor Mark Hamill. Despite the franchise's extensive exploration of the Skywalker saga and its myriad characters, there remains a vast, unexplored dark side that could be ripe for horror storytelling. While some spinoffs have delved into scarier themes, major projects typically cater to a broad, family-friendly audience.

Andor itself stands out as a more mature and highly praised addition to the Star Wars universe. Its first season, released in 2022, was a critical success, earning a 9/10 in our review. Fans eagerly await the premiere of the first three episodes of Andor Season 2 on April 22. In the meantime, you can learn more about how the success of Season 1 facilitated the development of Season 2 and explore our breakdown of other Star Wars projects slated for 2025.
