The Argentine indie studio Matajuegos has released its thought-provoking documentary game Atuel on Android and Steam. First launched on itch.io in September 2022, this experimental title blends personal narratives with breathtaking environments to create something truly special.
An Award-Winning Vision
Since its debut, Atuel has captivated audiences worldwide, earning the prestigious Innovation in Experience Design Award at IndieCade 2022. Its artistic merit has taken it to prestigious venues like Cannes Film Festival's Marché du Film and Washington D.C.'s Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Journey Through Living Landscapes
Atuel transports players to Argentina's Cuyo desert region through an innovative blend of documentary storytelling and interactive exploration. Unlike traditional games, you'll:
- Flow between perspectives as different elements of the ecosystem
- Hear authentic testimonies from scientists and locals
- Experience poetic symbolism addressing climate challenges
A River Runs Through It
The game draws inspiration from the majestic Atuel River ecosystem - from its glacial Andean origins to the breathtaking Valle Grande canyon it carved over millennia. This natural wonder serves as both setting and central metaphor.
Lead artist Santiago Franzani describes Atuel as "a waking dream documentary" that prioritizes emotional truth over literal realism. Supported by international filmmakers from The 12.01 Project, the game creates:
- Fluid transitions between human and environmental perspectives
- Organic storytelling through movement and transformation
- A meditation on humanity's fragile bond with nature
The full experience is available free with controller support on Google Play.
