Ubisoft's latest addition to its expansive series of stealth-action open-world games, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has finally arrived. But how does it stack up against its predecessors? We're turning the decision over to you. With over 30 titles released under the Assassin’s Creed banner, we're focusing solely on the mainline games for this ranking, excluding mobile, side-scrolling, VR entries, and spin-offs like Bloodlines or Liberation.
The journey began in 2007 with Desmond Miles entering the Animus to experience the life of his ancestor Altaïr. Fast forward 18 years, and players now find themselves in 16th-century Japan, controlling Naoe and Yasuke. This latest installment marks the 14th entry in the core series. I've taken a stab at ranking them using an IGN Tier List, based solely on my personal enjoyment of each game. You can check out my tier list below:
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remains my top pick, cherished for its blend of island exploration, ship combat, and vibrant characters, making it the quintessential AC experience for me. It's joined in the S-tier by Assassin’s Creed 2, the game that truly propelled the series into the spotlight. I've placed Valhalla in the A-tier, a choice that might surprise some, but I adored the Viking-inspired combat and the addictive Orlog minigame. Alongside it is Unity, whose depiction of French Revolution-era Paris remains breathtaking even a decade later.
Disagree with my rankings? Think Valhalla is overly bloated or that Assassin’s Creed 2 is overrated? Feel free to create your own tier list and compare your S, A, B, C, and D tiers with the IGN community.
